Just What Is A Heat Pump?

Get the Basics On the Advantages of Owning a Heat Pump

There's a lot of confusion about heat pumps. What are they? How do they work? Are they a replacement for a furnace? Let's take a quick look at some of these questions. Remember, you can always get more details by calling us and talking to one of our home comfort experts.

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a system that transfers heat from one area to another. They are commonly used in homes to provide heating in weather down to around the freezing range. Below that, an auxiliary heating unit comes on to assist or take over providing heat.

How Do They Work?

Heat pumps do this by compressing liquid refrigerant, which traps the heat, then decompressing the refrigerant, which releases the heat. Even on the coldest winter days, the air outside your home still has a great deal of heat in it. Heat pumps work by extracting this heat from the outside air and moving it into your home.

Believe it or not, air conditioners and refrigerators are actually heat pumps. We don't think of them in that way - we see them as cooling, not heating - but they are actually transferring heat from inside your home or refrigerator to the outside of your home or refrigerator. The by-product is the cooling they provide.

Can a Heat Pump Replace a Furnace?

In the McAfee service area - Southwest Ohio - heat pumps can provide additional heating down into the freezing range making a heat pump a great addition to the furnace. We call this the “McAfee Hybrid System.” During those cool fall and spring days the gas furnace remains off while the heat pump keeps you comfortable and can be more efficient than gas to operate. However, when the temperature drops down below freezing, the heat pump automatically shuts off and the gas furnace then comes on. This allows steady comfort all winter long with cool comfort in the summer as well.
